Lighthouse Arts, Inc. — A Beacon for America’s Original Art Form
Lighthouse Arts, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating, preserving, and celebrating jazz—America’s unique, national musical heritage. Grounded in Pittsburgh’s rich tradition of artistic innovation, the organization was founded by a cross-section of regional jazz, education, and business leaders to ensure that jazz music and its history remain a vibrant, accessible part of the local community.
A Focus on the Artist & Education Unlike many arts institutions, Lighthouse Arts sets itself apart by placing the creative artist at the center of its mission. The organization focuses on improving the quality of jazz education from K–12 through the college level, making opportunities available for students and the public to explore the many dimensions of the genre. Through educational programs, community partnerships, and media outreach, Lighthouse Arts works to recapture, teach, and preserve jazz culture in an encouraging, inclusive environment.
Connecting Three Generations of Jazz Lighthouse Arts actively bridges the past, present, and future of Pittsburgh jazz by supporting three distinct tiers of local talent:
The Ascended Masters: Living legends and elders who blazed early trails and established the gold standard for the art form.
The Torchbearers: Seasoned performers who navigate the evolving musical landscape while keeping the legacy relevant.
The Young Lions: Emerging musicians who build upon this rich foundation to carve out new paths for the future of jazz.
By hosting live concerts at the region's best venues, producing recordings, and utilizing broadcast, print, and digital media, Lighthouse Arts continues to document, support, and elevate regional talent—ensuring that Pittsburgh’s extraordinary musical legacy inspires generations to come.
