Where Art Meets Mathematics at the Wilkins School Community Center

Located in Room 105 of the Wilkins School Community Center (WSCC), Convergent Series is the creative studio of Carol Scheftic. A former professor of mathematics and computer science, Carol brings her passion for visualization and structure into the world of metal clay and ceramics. Her studio is a space for both the creation of unique, handmade art jewelry and a hub for community workshops.

The Art of Metal Clay

The "Convergent Series" name reflects Carol's transition from the abstract world of math to the tangible world of design. Her primary medium is metal clay—a fascinating material that feels and handles like ceramic clay but consists of microscopic metal particles mixed with an organic binder.

  • The Process: After being shaped, textured, and dried, the piece is fired in a kiln. The binder burns away, and the metal particles fuse together, leaving behind a solid piece of Fine Silver, Sterling Silver, Bronze, Copper, or Steel.

  • The Result: Unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry that often features reversible designs, intricate textures, and mixed-metal elements.

Workshops and Learning

Carol is a certified metal clay artisan and accredited teacher who believes that "visualization is key to understanding." Her workshops are designed for all skill levels, from absolute beginners to experienced artists.

  • Introductory Classes: Learn to make reversible domed pendants, silver buttons, or textured earrings.

  • Specialized Techniques: Workshops cover hollow-form lentil beads, "silver nests," and the use of gemstones or enamels to add color.

  • Private Lessons: Carol offers private and semi-private instruction tailored to your specific creative goals.

While Carol is currently focusing on recovery from health issues, her studio remains a vital part of the WSCC community.
