Watercolors by Lisa Rasmussen
May 19 to June 29, 2025
Lisa Rasmussen’s solo exhibition at The Wilkins School Community Center offers a striking exploration of emotion and atmosphere through the fluid medium of watercolor. Rasmussen, known for her mastery across many forms, here focuses solely on watercolor—allowing the transparency, unpredictability, and layering of the medium to speak volumes.
Her work balances technical precision with expressive depth. In The Thin Line Between Solitude and Loneliness, a quiet interior scene bathed in deep blues and warm light evokes a complex emotional tension—inviting viewers to reflect on space, silence, and the emotional resonance of stillness. In contrast, Singin’ the Blues captures the soulful intensity of a live performance. The rich hues and rhythmic brushstrokes breathe with music and motion, showcasing Rasmussen’s ability to animate her subjects with life and presence.
What ties these works together is the artist’s gift for translating feeling into form. Whether depicting an empty room or a vibrant musician, Rasmussen captures what’s not always visible—mood, memory, story. Her use of light and shadow, particularly in this body of work, lends each piece a cinematic, almost theatrical quality.
This exhibition is a testament to Rasmussen’s versatility and her deep understanding of how medium and message can merge. Visitors are encouraged to attend the Meet the Artist event on Sunday, May 25 from 2 to 4 PM for a chance to engage with Rasmussen and gain insight into her creative process.

Creative Collage and Assemblidge by Penny Lang
February 28 to April 6, 2025
Penny Lang’s collages invite viewers into a world of layered textures, bold compositions, and unexpected juxtapositions. Her work blends found imagery with expressive color and form, transforming everyday materials into captivating visual narratives.
Each piece reflects Penny’s instinctive approach, where cut and torn edges and overlapping elements create a dynamic sense of movement.
Themes of memory, whimsy, and discovery emerge organically as she masterfully balances structure with spontaneity. Her collages are a testament to the beauty of imperfection—embracing the surprises that come with the creative process.
This debut solo exhibition celebrates Penny’s artistic evolution, offering a collection that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. It showcases her passion for collage as an accessible, freeing medium that proves art is not about rules but joyful exploration.
Penny Lang, a Wilkinsburg native, grew up surrounded by creativity but never considered herself an artist. Encouraged by a childhood of free play, she only discovered her artistic passion later in life, using art to unwind while raising her family. Her first “studio” was a simple folding card table by a window—an intimate space that began her creative journey.
After retiring, Penny focused on making notecards, which were sold in various venues across Pittsburgh. Over the years, she has participated in and taught art classes and workshops. Today, she finds joy and inspiration in meeting with the Wilkins art group, whose encouragement led her to host her first solo show, which will run at Wilkins until the end of March.
Penny’s love for collage stems from its boundless possibilities—there are no rules, only exploration. The act of cutting, layering, and composing with paper allows her a sense of creative freedom, making each piece a playful and intuitive process.
