What is the Wilkins School Community Center (WSCC)?
The Wilkins School Community Center is a non-profit, 501c3 organization that has been a vital space in the heart of Regent Square for over 30 years. The former school building, located at 7604 Charleston Avenue at the intersection of Milton Avenue, provides a meeting place for many civic groups such as the Regent Square Civic Association (RSCA) and the Run Around the Square (RATS).
Several cultural and educational organizations use the WSCC to teach and meet, such as the Osher Institute of Life Long Learning and the OCA, the Organization of Chinese Americans. The WSCC itself offers numerous classes in the arts, dance, yoga, martial arts, cooking, and fitness each week. Some rooms in the center, including a kitchen, are available for rent. Many in the neighborhood cast their ballots on Election Day at the WSCC.
In 2006, the WSCC installed a playground on the grounds with the help of members from the community. This playground is enjoyed daily by children in the neighborhood and was paid for by the fundraising efforts of the WSCC. The WSCC is responsible for all building and ground maintenance. These expenses are paid with membership contributions, tax-deductible donations, and rental fees. Volunteers are an important component of our operation; volunteers maintain the WSCC gardens, stock and run the Annual Used Book and Plant Sale, and plan and produce the Holiday Gift Shop and EcoFest.
If you enjoy having a vibrant community center in the neighborhood and all that it offers, please show us your support by participating in our events, becoming a friend of the WSCC, making a donation, or volunteering.
